Photography is the documentation of life, once that shutter has clicked, the moment has passed and history is made. Some may be familiar with project 365, a simple concept, take a photograph everyday for 365 days. This blog is an extension of the project; the goal is to keep photographing every day, who knows how long? It is an excellent archive to look back on, see how things change. Change can be subtle, such as different coloured flowers being planted each year to a changing landscape with buildings being demolished and new ones built. This blog archives life’s diversity and my encounters.

Amazing weather dominated this past week. On Monday before work I enjoyed the beautiful weather walking around downtown. Queen’s Geography 318 class was at Elbow Lake studying species diversity and growth patterns over the past two weekends.

2013 09 29 – Morgan McHaffie of the Queen’s Gaels scores on Elodie Rousseau Sirois of the University of Montreal during a preseason tournament at the INVISTA Centre.  Queen’s ended up defeating Montreal 5-2.

Thank you for checking out this past week's photos. At this point in time the theme for next week is squirrels but who knows, it might change.

Wide-angle photography was this week’s theme until Friday’s photo shoot. I thought about taking a wide-angle photograph but I prefer the use of a telephoto lens when photographing portraits. Saturday’s photograph will likely be from a telephoto lens and then Sunday’s climbing photo was a 50 f1.8. This coming week’s photographs will not have a theme, enjoy.
-->
2013 09 16 – Queen’s students, faculty and members of the Kingston community assemble outside Stauffer Library to voice their opinion towards the government’s attitude towards science. Numerous rallies were held across Canada, expressing the need for scientist to be able to freely communicate to the public. 2013 Week 37 Photos

2013 Week 37 Photos

By Corey Lablans Photography

The first week of school has past and everyone is getting into the usual routine. This past week’s photos illustrates some of the common University life: readings, walking to and from class, various clubs and working on computers. Another large part of Queen’s is its athletics, almost every weekend some sporting event occurs. Generally the theme was Queen’s life, next week I will try for wide-angle photographs.
2013 09 09 – A student sits in the Bioscience Auditorium checks something on her computer after class. The $52 million Bioscience Complex houses the Department of Biology and was opened in 1997.

2013 09 10 – A student looks over some readings while enjoying the nice weather during the first week of classes.

2013 09 11 – A member of the Queen’s Dance Team walks across the Athletics & Recreational Centre’s (ARC) floor on her hands during the Tricolour Open House; an open house highlighting the numerous clubs students can get involved in at Queen’s University.

2013 09 12 – Students walk past a fire truck parked along University Avenue, after three trucks responded to a fire alarm. Numerous false alarms are pulled every year, which diverts resources from potential real fires.

2013 09 13 – Students wait outside the John Deutsch University Centre at Queen’s University waiting for a bus to head home. The Tricolour located in the upper level of the JDUC sells tickets to numerous destinations.

2013 09 14 – Competitors compete in the Queen’s invitational at Fort Henry Hill. Both the Queen’s women’s and men’s took first place in teams and individuals.

2013 09 15 – Bishop University’s #14, Bradley Haddon, leans into Queen’s University’s #26, Marc Santos, while trying to keep him away from the ball during Sunday’s lacrosse game. Queen’s won 8-7.

2013 Week 36 Photos

2013 Week 36 Photos

By Corey Lablans Photography

This past week was one of those weeks where it is difficult to choose what photograph you are going to pick to represent the day. Queen’s orientation week is unlike any other; it is filled with excitement and many activities to cover. Here are my picks, hope you enjoy the colours and expressions from this past week’s photos.
2013 09 02 – The Queen’s Dance Pom (Pack) perform during Monday’s football game against McMaster Marauders, Queen’s won 31-24.

2013 09 03 – Queen’s Gaels cheer, as they are about to embark on leading frosh around campus for the next three days. One of the traditions is to yell out to Gaels and frosh and ask “How do you feel” their response is suppose to be, “We feel so good, oh we feel so good, oh we feel so good,” while thrusting.

2013 09 04 – A Frec makes a face at the engineering frosh while prepping them before their eng cuts. If you are interested to know what Frec stands for, check it out on the Urban Dictionary: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Frec

2013 09 05 – Colourful hands hold a camera while partaking in the Queen’s NEWTS coverall painting at Victoria Park. NEWTS stands for New Exchange and Worldly Transfer Students.

2013 09 06 – A student is being covered in mud as she covers someone else in mud during the Highland Games portion of the engineering orientation week. Numerous events go on during the day: mud wrestling, tug-a-war, some ball game and others.

2013 09 07 – Sam Sabourin of the Queen’s Gaels tackles Mitch Dender of the Windsor Lancers, while a Queen’s Gael is tackled by Nathan O’Halloran of the Lancers in the background. Queen’s won the game 49-34.

2013 09 08 – Three members of various fossil and mineral clubs are seen at the base of a limestone wall at the Danford Quarry near Madoc. The limestone is upper Ordovician with numerous gastropods, cephalopods and brachiopods.

Get out and photograph, preserve the present, remember the past and enjoy every moment, even those that might not always be enjoyable.
THANK YOU and Have a Wonderful Day!!

2013 Week 35 Photos

2013 Week 35 Photos

By Corey Lablans Photography

Started off the week in Kingston and ended it in Kingston, as I returned from my summer working in Bancroft. Some good photos and some not so good but here are the photos from my 13th week, just over three months of photographing on a daily basis.

2013 08 26 – Construction workers use an asphalt grinder to cut a straight flat edge before fully paving University Avenue. Before pavers can lay the final asphalt, the temporary slope, making driving easier, must be removed and a sharp flat surface must be made.

2013 08 27 – A reese’s blizzard sits on the Dairy Queen counter before it magically disappeared into my mouth. In 1928 a former dairy farmer created the yummy peanut butter cups and in 1940 the first Dairy Queen opened in Joliet, Illinois. Now both can be enjoyed in a cold delicious dessert.

2013 08 28 – Chris Hayward performs during the last of the Mineral Capital Concerts, as Howard plays the base in the background. Every Wednesday evening different performers have taken to the stage at Millennium Park. More information on Chris Hayward: https://www.facebook.com/Chrishaywardmusic

2013 08 29 – A group of mineral collectors on tour at Millar’s Mine near Tory Hill look for Tremolite. Tremolite is a member of the amphibole group; it is formed by the metamorphism of dolomite, silica and water.

2013 08 30 – Two girls perform a duet during Maynooth’s Got Talent at the Arlington Pub, a kick-start event to Maynooth Madness. In its 21st year numerous events occur orientated towards logging and farming.

2013 08 31 – Fifteen competitors mow down on wings during the first annual wing eating competition at the South Algonquin Eatery and Pub in Bancroft, Ontario. A total of 325 wings were consumed with the winner eating 30 in 10 minutes winning a pair of tickets to a blue jays game.

2013 09 01 – A student moves into Vic Hall at Queen’s University during Move In Day. Queen’s University has a total of 9,932 full time undergraduate students enrolled in Arts and Science, according to Queen’s University website.
