Photography is the documentation of life, once that shutter has clicked, the moment has passed and history is made. Some may be familiar with project 365, a simple concept, take a photograph everyday for 365 days. This blog is an extension of the project; the goal is to keep photographing every day, who knows how long? It is an excellent archive to look back on, see how things change. Change can be subtle, such as different coloured flowers being planted each year to a changing landscape with buildings being demolished and new ones built. This blog archives life’s diversity and my encounters.

2014 05 19 – Fireworks light up the night sky as thousands of people line the shorelines at Lake Ontario Park for the first time in a decade. This is part of the park’s revitalization project, which began last year.

2014 05 20 – The owner of this Chevrolet Camaro 396 bought it new 35 years ago and is keeping it in nice condition.  These cars first hit the dealerships in September of 1966.

2014 05 21 – In 2007 Canadian mining firm Teck Cominco Ltd made a $10 million gift to the Royal Ontario Museum to create the new exhibit. The Teck Suite of Galleries: Earth’s Treasures is located on the second floor of the ROM and contains approximately 3000 specimens.

2014 05 22 – A 32 GB ProMaster secure digital memory card hangs on the wall at Camera Kingston. ProMaster is a buying group that sells to independent photographic dealers, producing some really nice and affordable equipment.

2014 05 23 – A student competes in one of the long jump competitions at the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletics Association (EOSSAA) track and field meet in Brockville at the Thousand Island Secondary School.

2014 05 24 – A highland dancer competes in Kingston Scottish Festival held at Rideau Acres Campground off highway 15. The one-day festival had a variety of pipe and dance competitions, along with vendors selling Scottish memorabilia.

2014 05 25 – Two kiteboarders make their way towards the shore after the wind dies down leaving them afloat in Lake Ontario. The lake’s temperature is around 6 degrees Celsius. 2014 05 12 – Construction workers continue to remove soil around old pipes along upper Princess Street near MacDonnell. This is part of what has been dubbed the “Big Dig,” a project that is revitalizing Princess Street and its infrastructure.

2014 05 13 – A Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute girls rugby player is tackled by a Holy Cross Secondary School player during a regular season KASSAA game at Holy Cross. Holy Cross ended up defeating KCVI 20-0.

2014 05 14 – Three generations of $10 bills were used while at work today. The bill in the background is part of the Birds of Canada series released in 1989. The second bill is from the Canadian Journey series released in 2006 and the front bill is the most series called the Frontier Series.

2014 05 15 – Red tulips are in bloom beside the old train station at the Flora MacDonald Confederation Basin. The train station was part of the Kingston and Pembroke Railway, built in the late 1800’s.

2014 05 16 – A student of the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletics Association (KASSAA) competes in the midget high jump during the local track and field meet held at the Caraco Home Field. Next week is the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletics Association (EOSSAA) meet in Brockville.

2014 05 17 – Bricks and construction material line the floor of an old carriageway, that is part of a building built in 1834. These historical buildings, once housed Sir John A. MacDonald’s first law office, are now being transformed into residential units.

2014 05 18 – A lady flips a papusa at the weekly Memorial Centre farmers market held every Sunday. The traditional Salvadoran cuisine consists of a handmade corn tortilla filled with cheese, refried beans and pork. The first time I have had this dish and it was delicious.

2014 05 05 – A student from the Bayridge High School boys senior soccer team heads the ball while taking on Marie-Rivier in a regular season Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association game. Bayridge won 6-0.

2014 05 06 – This dactylioceras is part of my collection and is from Yorkshire, England. This genus of ammonites was widespread during the Jurassic period, approximately 172 million years ago.

2014 05 07 – Started doing some preparation work on these two Mucrospirifer in a clay matrix from the Widder Formation at Hungry Hollow. This is an extinct genus of brachiopod that lived in muddy marine sediments some 360 million years ago.

2014 05 08 – This graffiti is probably one of my favourites behind Camera Kingston. It was created several years back and was done overtop of growing vines, this is why there are segments missing.

2014 05 09 – New store and office spaces await new businesses on Fortune Crescent off Gardiners Road in Kingston. Currently a café, burrito restaurant and dental facility have moved in. Will be interesting to see what takes the other open spaces.

2014 05 10 – A teddy bear sits on the back of a motorcycle outside of Lone Star wearing a City of Kingston pin, a Support Our Troops tag and a Ride for Sight pin. Ride for Sight received its charitable status in 1974 and raises money to fight blindness.

2014 05 11 – Numerous people walk around the Sunday Antique Market at Springer Market Square. The market runs every Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting in April and ending in October.

2014 04 28 – Various clay covered horn corals and brachiopods collected at Hungry Hollow lay across the picnic table. According to a paper from the University of Western Ontario there are 258 species from the Arkona Formation, 341 species from the Hungry Hollow Formation and 208 from the Widder Formation.

2014 04 29 – A 2014 Honda Accord is covered in water as it rains. The accord has been a leading seller in the United States since 1989 and began manufacturing in 1976. (New car dad bought a few weeks ago)

2014 04 30 – Doing some preparation work on this Greenops trilobite found last weekend in Hungry Hallow near Arkona. It was found within the Hamilton Group, Widder Formation and is middle Devonian in age, approximately 416 years ago.

2014 05 01 – A student from Regiopolis-Notre Dame Catholic High School gets her foot on the ball while taking on Frontenac Secondary High School in a regular season senior girls soccer game. Regi ended up winning the game in a 1-0 shutout.

2014 05 02 – This gorgeous looking bike was outside of work tonight. I was unable to find the make, so sadly I can’t provide any fun facts about it. On a different note, bikes originated from an earlier invention called a draisine in 1817, it did not have pedals; one would push the bike forward for momentum.

2014 05 03 – An Old Milwaukee can sits on a cross beam at the Hanson Memorial Garage off Brock Street. In Canada, Old Milwaukee is brewed by Sleeman Breweries, which is owned by Sapporo Brewery, the oldest beer brand in Japan.

2014 05 04 – Alf Newnham, the field trip coordinator for Kingston and Picton, takes a look at a fluorite sample from a member while at the Noyes Fluorite Mine near Madoc. The Noyes mine operated from 1941 to 1943. It is estimated that over 25,000 tones of ore have been extracted since it first began producing in 1916.
