Photography is the documentation of life, once that shutter has clicked, the moment has passed and history is made. Some may be familiar with project 365, a simple concept, take a photograph everyday for 365 days. This blog is an extension of the project; the goal is to keep photographing every day, who knows how long? It is an excellent archive to look back on, see how things change. Change can be subtle, such as different coloured flowers being planted each year to a changing landscape with buildings being demolished and new ones built. This blog archives life’s diversity and my encounters.

2017 10 16 – A red coloured silver maple leaf (Acer saccharinum) lies on the ground outside of the apartment in Thunder Bay. The genus name referrers to the sharp points on a maple leaf, while the silver referrers to the underside colouration.

2017 10 17 – Halloween decorations brighten up the front of one of the school buses in Thunder Bay. Halloween is a combination of various celebrations, which includes All Saints’ Day and Samhain.

2017 10 18 – A view of the river crossing Nicholetts Road west of Thunder Bay after completing a check of the bus ensuring no students were left on.

2017 10 19 – My Carnage Tyrant has no chance against The Scarab God and two hijacked Ripjaw Raptors during a magic game at Thunder Games. Definitely did not end up winning this game.

2017 10 20 – A muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) eats some vegetation in Lake Tamblyn at Lakehead University. Muskrats can hold their breath up to 20 minutes.

2017 10 21 – A player looks through Pokémon Sun & Moon Crimson Invasion cards during a pre-release event at Thunder Games and Gifts.

2017 10 22 – This is my first attempt at changing the tire of Johnathan’s car. It didn’t work out, as the jack would not lift the vehicle high enough.

2017 10 09 – A colourful Thanksgiving dinner plate that Johnathan and I prepared. There are roughly 46 million turkeys consumed by Americans each year.

2017 10 10 – The last rays of the evening sun shine on an old tractor in a field north of Thunder Bay off Dawson Road.

2017 10 11 – The setting sun turns the sky a beautiful gradient from orange to blue, as a row of black spruce (Picea mariana) silhouette the foreground. The black spruce is Newfoundland and Labrador’s provincial tree, also known as the bog spruce.

2017 10 12 – A no parking sign at Lakehead University is beat by the elements, as it fades away. Signs that reflect light back to the driver usually use retroreflectivity, a reflection process that uses three mirrors perpendicular to each other.

2017 10 13 – A dinosaur drawing was created on the white board at Thunder Games and Gifts when Ixalan was released. It has now had new features added, such as the Harry Potter wizard hat.

2017 10 14 – A bagpiper leads in a procession during the introduction of Octoberfest at the Sleeping Giant Brewery.

2017 10 15 – A curious fox (Vulpes vulpes) walks around the car in search of food in Thunder Bay’s south end. This fox was exceptionally tame. A group of foxes are called a skulk or leash.

2017 Week 40 Photos

2017 10 02 – A train sits on the tracks in front of the 19th century grain elevator along Thunder Bay’s shoreline. The Fort William grain elevator, along with many others, was built in the mid 1920’s.

2017 10 03 – This is a view of Academy Gardens. A friend who is doing his Masters at Lakehead University is helping me out, letting me stay with him for a few months.

2017 10 04 – A silver maple leaf shows its fall colours. Yellows and oranges are reflected once the plant’s chlorophyll begins to fade and die. Chlorophyll is vital to photosynthesis providing the plant with energy, when chlorophyll is healthy it absorb light in the blue and red spectrum, reflecting green wavelengths.

2017 10 05 – A red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) holds onto a branch along the shoreline at Mission Island Marsh Conservation area. A red squirrel’s pregnancy lasts 36-42 days and their young are called kittens.

2017 10 06 – A pre-release holofoil of Regisaur Alpha, along with a Verdant’s Sun’s Avatar and holofoil treasure token are a few of the cards that I got for placing first in Friday Night Magic draft.

2017 10 07 – Fall colours dominate the foreground as Mount McKay makes for a beautiful background in Thunder Bay. Mount McKay is a mesa (table top) mountain formed by differences in lithology resistance, the top is a resistant diabase sill, underlined by sedimentary rocks.

2017 10 08 – Numerous birch trees make for a beautiful background to this characteristic cedar siding shed north of Thunder Bay.

2017 09 25 – Two girls enjoy the warm evening out on Lake Ontario in front of MacDonald Park. Hurricane Irma pushed a warm air mass north bringing unusual warmth to Ontario with temperatures above 30-degree Celsius.

2017 09 26 – A spider web is covered in dewdrops at Lemoine Point Conservation area. Warm days and cool nights have resulted in mornings with a lot of dew.

2017 09 27 – The sun sets as a truck makes its way north along highway 69 towards Sudbury. This was the first of two days driving, as I move to Thunder Bay.

2017 09 28 – King’s Highway 17 makes its way through a low lying section of rolling hills north of Sault St. Marie, it use to extend 2,180 kilometers from Quebec to Manitoba. In 1971 a section of it became Highway 417.

2017 09 29 – Blue paint peels off a rustic metal parking lot marker at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

2017 09 30 – A Magic the Gathering draft game, that carried on for a long time, nears its end during the first official week of Ixalan release. Thunder Games and Gifts ran drafts Saturday and Sunday. Drafting is a form of sealed play, where players construct decks from unknown cards they open from packs.

2017 10 01 – A photograph of myself going through various Magic the Gathering angels, I picked up a few more this past weekend. I have most of the angels, missing a few of the pricier ones.
