2018 09 10 – The sun shines on the northwestern wall of the main pit while drill and blast crews work on the 250 bench.

2018 09 11 – I’m enjoying some Dairy Queen while I watch The Simpsons. The chicken fingers are coated in buffalo sauce and ranch dressing. The Scoville scale, used for determining spiciness is based on the concentration of capsaicin, a neuropeptide. While Franks only has a rating of 400 to 500, pure capsaicin, which some hot sauces are made of reach 16 million.

2018 09 12 – A stir fry of broccoli, onions and bell peppers over a bed of rice with some teriyaki sauce. Although I’m using teriyaki sauce, teriyaki is a cooking technique used in Japan in which foods are broiled or grilled, glazed with soy sauce, mirin (type of rice wine) and sugar.

2018 09 13 – A freshly made brownie, using the Hershey’s brownie recipe on the side of their coco container, with a scoop of Smarties ice cream on top.

2018 09 14 – A vibrant purple morning glory (Ipomoea purpurea) stands out amongst the green leaves along the side of the house in Fort Frances. According to Wikipedia morning glory seeds have a historical use as a psychedelic, which is why commercial seeds are coated in a toxic chemical.

2018 09 15 – I am stir-frying some onions in my wok. This is a flat-bottomed wok, allowing it to be used on an electric stove top, while traditional woks are round bottomed and are used over a gas hob or pit stove.

2018 09 16 – Stephen holds a Scarab God in his hand, along with other Magic: The Gathering cards while partaking in Game Day at Hometown Hobbies and Crafts. His zombie based deck ended up winning the day’s event, claiming the title of store champion.

2018 09 03 – Visitors enjoy the beauty of Kakabeka Falls west of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Cascading over Precambrian shale it is the second highest falls in Ontario with a height of 40 meters.

2018 09 04 – The production of bubbles in soap is predominantly for a psychological effect. As consumers we feel a sense of comfort when we see bubbles, thinking they aid in the cleaning process but they do nothing.

2018 09 05 – These are a few of the 3000 meters of core that will be pulled out over the next couple of days in preparation for geologist to examine particular sections of the mine’s deposit. There is over 600,000 meters of core in various racks.

2018 09 06 – Weeds grow up around sea canisters at work. According to Port Technologies approximately 675 sea canisters are lost at sea each year.

2018 09 07 – Tags with Quick Response codes (QR codes) are printed off and ready to be used when picking up blast hole samples. QR codes were designed in 1994 for the automotive industry in Japan.

2018 09 08 – Cumulus clouds line the sky above the phase one pit at work.

2018 09 09 – In the background one of the larger tower drills works on the 250 meter bench while in the foreground blast hole samples await being taken to the lab in the bed of our truck.

2018 08 27 – A drill works on the 380 bench (380 m above sea level) at the east outcrop. The material being mined here goes towards construction projects.

2018 08 28 – Cardboard tubes are used in the blast holes to prevent the upper portion from collapsing in on itself. This occurs quite a bit when there is more water present.

2018 08 29 – A yellow-rumped warbler (Setophaga coronata) looks out through the needles of a bishop pine (Pinus muricata) at Voyageurs National Park in International Falls, Minnesota.

2018 08 30 – Intermittent sun shines on a barn off highway 17 east of Kakabeka Falls, Ontario near Stanley Road.

2018 08 31 – Kayte is in the process of making a move while taking on Chow in a draft match at Thunder Games and Gifts in Thunder Bay. We were drafting Magic: The Gathering Core 2019 set.

2018 09 01 – The sun shines through Johnathan and Adriane’s south facing window in Thunder Bay lighting up their plant and owl pillow.

2018 09 02 – A Eastern chipmunk (Tamias striatus) devours a peanut at the Blue Points Amethyst Mine in Pearl, Ontario. The chipmunks love it there, as the owner has a bag of shelled peanuts for them to enjoy.

2018 08 20 – I came across this young snapping turtle making its way onto Highway 11 as I was driving back to Fort Frances, Ontario from Thunder Bay.

2018 08 21 – A delicious roast beef dinner accompanied by some roasted potatoes and asparagus. This was probably one of the nicest roasts I have cooked in a long time.

2018 08 22 – The left over roast beef made for a delicious roast beef sandwich.

2018 08 23 – Drills are on the 240 bench.

2018 08 24 – Rock mechanics is important when it comes to mine design and wall clean up, as large failures can occur such as this one. Everything was in place to deal with it.

2018 08 25 – An Atlas Copco FlexiROC drills holes on the 320 bench. This pattern has been difficult because of its uneven terrain and I can’t wait till it is blasted.

2018 08 26 – Production occurs in the east outcrop, hauling non-ore material for construction. Material is always being needed for construction of new roads and the tailing-management area.
